Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a decade-long career with Nigeria just days before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco.
The 31-year-old defender, who plays for Al-Kholood in the Saudi Pro League, revealed his decision to teammates in the dressing room after Nigeria’s playoff defeat to DR Congo on November 19. The loss dashed the country’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a second consecutive miss for the three-time African champions.
Troost-Ekong made his competitive debut for the Super Eagles in 2015 against Chad and went on to earn 83 caps, score eight goals, and establish himself as one of Nigeria’s most dependable defenders. His international career also saw him win bronze at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, and secure silver medals in the 2021 and 2023 editions of the tournament.
The Dutch-Nigerian player featured in five major international competitions, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup, becoming a key figure for the national team and earning the nickname “Oyinbo Wall” for his commanding defensive style.
In his emotional farewell statement, Troost-Ekong reflected on his journey from a young footballer in the Netherlands to leading Nigeria as captain. “Every single time I have put on that iconic shirt… I have thought back to that moment,” he wrote.
“From a boy born and raised in the Netherlands to the Oyinbo Wall, and eventually Skipper, is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart,” he added.
His retirement marks the end of an era for the Super Eagles as the team heads into AFCON 2025 without one of its most influential leaders.
